St Marylebone C of E School is a specialist secondary school for girls in Marylebone, London. It specialises in Performing Arts and Maths & Computing.[1] In the sixth form, boys can also attend.
Founded in 1791, St Marylebone Church of England School is a multi-faith comprehensive school for girls aged from eleven to eighteen. It is located just behind St Marylebone Parish Church, with some year 12-13 lessons in another building in nearby Blandford Street- 7 minutes away from Marylebone High St. In the 1960s-70s the school used a building in Penfold Street, about 15 minutes from the main site, for Domestic Science lessons; this building is now used by the Westminster Youth Service.
It has been designated a Specialist Arts College by the DfES, and gained an extra specialism as a Mathematics and Computing College in 2006. The school offers artist in residence schemes, workshops, and visits from and to dance companies, and local and national theatres.
In a recent (2007) secondary school ranking, the school came 24th in the whole of England, beating many private schools. It is one of the most oversubscribed schools in London. The ratio of places and subscriptions is 1:120. Unlike other schools, St.Marylebone School pupils take their Key Stage 3 SATs in year 8 and not year 9 with excellent results.
Historically, the school had four houses- Dickens, Barret, Hardwick and Wesley. In September 2010, a fifth house, Nightingale was added. The houses are named after these significant people as they have had some kind of connection with the school (e.g. Thomas Hardwick designed the St Marylebone Church). The houses have the following colours; blue (Barret), yellow (Dickens), red (Hardwick), green (Wesley) and purple (Nightingale). When joining the school, pupils are allocated to one of the houses. In year 10, students switch houses.
The school has recently had a new Arts & P.E. building built, which work has been done on for the past 10 years. The new building includes two dance studios, a new sports hall, two changing rooms, three offices (dance office, music office & art office), two music rooms, five music practice rooms and two art rooms.
